The City of Kerrville City has been considering moving City
Hall for several years now. At one point city staff considered
purchasing the Guy Griggs Building (the tall building that was
behind the old Peterson Hospital Emergency Room) to use as City
Hall. That was soundly struck down.
The City says the present facility has too little floorspace
for their needs.
The City negotiated to purchase the current
building that houses Bank of America in downtown Kerrville. The
City believed the building would provide adequate space for the
City's needs in the years ahead. In addition, the City staff
said moving City Hall to Downtown Kerrville would stimulate business
in the downtown area. (EyeOnGovernment believes this is very
speculative)
Estiamtes to purchase and renovate the present Bank of America
building to suit the City's needs varied but generally speaking
hover around $2.9 million (yes, MILLION). That did notinclude
infrastructure needs or parking needs.
If anyone has been downtown in recent years you'll notice many
new business and established business have remained. Parking
space on both Water and Earl Garrett streets are at a premium
(especially during lunch hours or when a major case is being
tried at the courthouse)..
